RISE Lanka

Ongoing

Project Overview

The RISE Lanka Economic Crisis Activation project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian Humanitarian Partnership. In partnership with World Vision Lanka, the RISE Lanka initiative is an immediate response to children and families who are or are becoming food-insecure due to the present economic crisis.

The Problem

Considering the present economic and food crisis in Sri Lanka, recent research indicates that 9 million Sri Lankans are experiencing poverty and malnourishment. Increased transport and logistics costs have reduced access to treating hospitals and have furthermore forced paediatricians with a stock of therapeutic food to limit extended service to patients.

The Solution

To provide immediate relief, the RISE Lanka project introduced a mid-day meal program in preschools for preschoolers between the age of 3-5 who are at a critical stage of life in which they undergo rapid physical, mental, social, and spiritual growth, and yet do not qualify for assistance through the Ministry of Education of the Government of Sri Lanka.

The Impact

1. 500 Malnourished children between 3-5 years of age rehabilitated in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and other humanitarian actors.

2. 1,000 Nutritionally vulnerable people are sensitized to the importance of nutrition and diversified dietary intake.

3. 600 Nutritionally vulnerable families supported with integrated nutritional home gardens.

4. Facilitated the meal program for 1,500 children aged 3-5 across 100 pre-schools.
