JDC Board Members Visit Sarvodaya

Sarvodaya Headquarters, Moratuwa. Sarvodaya staff were happy to receive and meet with Board Members of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (AJJDC), on their visit to Sri Lanka. The visiting delegation included AJJDC Country Director for India and Sri Lanka, Ms. Judi Amit, along with Laina Richter, Deputy Director of JDC International Development Programs, Dr. Michael Levinson, Memphis,Tennessee, USA, member of the International Development Committee, Betsy R. Sheerr, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, Chairperson of JDC’s International Development Program Committee, Ms. Rebecca Bardach, Programme Coordinator, Sri Lanka, and Mr. Eliot Goldstein, Programme Coordinator, Sri Lanka.

At the Sarvodaya Headquarters, the JDC delegation met with Dr. A. T. Ariyaratne, Founder and President of Sarvodaya, and other senior officers. Then the Board members traveled to the Galle region to visit select Tsunami related projects supported with generous funds by the JDC including:

  • Visit to Psycho-Social Support for Children and Economic Empowerment Projects for Women coordinated by Sarvodaya in Akurala and Keerhandigoda villages
  • Sarvodaya coordinated project to provide new furniture and equipment to Lower-Middle Class families whose homes were damaged in Tsunami in Dodanduwa village
  • Groundbreaking ceremony for the Rebuilding of the Ahangama Dharmarama Kanishta Vidyalaya in Ahangama. The school, which will serve close to 800 primary age students was destroyed in the December 26, 2004 Tsunami and is being rebuilt by JDC in partnership with the Rotary Mid-City 3220 Club of Colombo.
