International Peace Day 2007 – Sarvodaya Peace Meditation and Peace Walk in Trincomallee

On 21st of September 2007, to mark the United Nations International Day of Peace, re-invigorated its peace efforts particularly in the Eastern part of Sri Lanka with a large peace meditation and a peace walk in Trincomallee. Dr.A.T.Ariyaratne, Founder-President of Sarvodaya led the Peace walk through the Trincomallee town and later the Peace Meditation at the Sarvodaya District Centre in Uppuveli, Trincomallee. Around 5000 people belonging to Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities participated at the gathering. This event will now be followed with a series of activities in the Eastern province until October 2nd 2007, the 138th birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and also the first United Nations Declared International Day of Non-violence.

The events that will follow the 21st September peace activities are;

– Opening of the Children’s Resource Centre in Kalmunai supported by the Happy Hearts Fund and AIG Disaster Relief Fund U.S.A.
– The handling over of 100 houses for 78 Muslim and 22 Tamil families affected by the Tsunami in Ninthavur, Ampara, on the 30th of September 2007. This is a project sponsored by Kurier Aid Austria.
– The handing over of 200 houses for Tamil families affected by the Tsunami in Vaddavan, Batticoloa, on the 1st of October 2007. This project is sponsored by Kurier Aid Austria.
– Opening of a “Signature Park” in Batticoloa Town, a Children’s playground sponsored by the Bush-Clinton Tsunami fund on the 1st of October 2007.
– Commemoration of 138th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the later the launch of the bottom-up constitutional reform process through Deshodaya (the National Re-awakening programme) to be held at Vishva Niketan Peace Centre Moratuwa.
