This Workshop is being jointly run by Sarvodaya and the Durham University Project Sri Lanka. It will bring together academics and other professionals from various fields and disciplines. Their common focus will be on the contribution of the human and social sciences to issues of human well-being, including medical and environmental issues.
Topics addressed at the Workshop will include:
* Medical ethics and human rights
* Clinical trials and bio-ethics
* Buddhist environmental ethics
* Historical understanding of the Sri Lankan cinnamon industry
* The role of grassroots organisations in rural Sri Lanka
* Environmental policy and the aesthetics of nature
* Disaster and the concept of well-being
* Holistic community development

The Workshop will begin at 9.00 am with short welcoming addresses from Dr Vinya Ariyaratne (Executive Director of Sarvodaya) and Prof David E. Cooper (Durham University). It will be organised into sessions at which two presentations will be given and discussed. A final session will take the form of an open discussion on the theme of the Workshop.
Tea and lunch will be provided at the Sarvodaya Headquarters.
