Latest research report on Sarvodaya’s Telecentre programme within the overall context of ICT4D initiatives in Sri Lanka, including the eSriLanka programme coordinated by ICTA. The report provides special emphasis to the VIC – Village Information Centres – the unique feature of Sarvodaya’s Telecentre model to outreach the rural poor communities. It discusses how the model could bypass the infrastructural and computer literacy barriers, to establish sustainable low cost ICT models in order to empower rural masses.
Research was carried out in Oct, 2005 by Kamal Kapadia, a PhD candidate from University of California, Berkley, under the sponsorship of Prof. Eric Brewer, Technologies and Infrastructure for Emerging Regions Group, School of Information Management and Systems at University of California, Berkeley.
