Mount Carmel Church, Gampaha
Sarvodaya uses long-standing local contacts to provide relevant relief. Recently we received a letter from the Parish Priest at Mount Carmel Church in Gampaha. Sarvodaya had previously provided them with dry rations for distribution. They then sent an additional letter which read as follows:
There are so many families affected by Tidal Waves at Polliyawatta Hendala Wattala. They need the following materials [attached] for their school children. We are grateful to you for offering a helping hand. We distributed the dry rations you gave us
In response to this email, Captain Jeevan Ariyaratne found the requested items from a locally run garment business – John Stuart Bennett Mfg. LTD. The John Stuart Bennett Staff generously donated the following:
* 200 Books – 80 page, single rule
* 100 Books – 80 page, square rule
* 200 Books – 120 page, single rule
* 100 Books – 120 page, square rule
* 50 Books – 400 page, single rule
* 25 Books – 400 page, square rule
* 400 yards – Shirt Fabric
* 200 Meters – Twill Dark Blue Trouser Fabric
* 64 Meters – Twill White Trouser Fabric
The books are for school of course, and the fabric is for their blue-and-white uniforms. There is a gallery of 14 photos from Gampaha if you would like to see the people that received the goods.
I am planning to come over in April to lend my hammer and hands to the rebuilding effort. I was thinking it might be useful for me to bring school supplies (pencils, markers, erasers, rulers, calculators) donated by local businesses with me. Good idea – yes/no?

Have you received any comments Thom as I am going out on 5th March and am still at a loss as to what people are really needing?
