Founded in 1958 by Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne, in one remote marginalized village with a shramadana camp, today Sarvodaya provides a variety of services such as relief, livelihood, enterprise development and micro-financing, rural technical services including water and sanitation, early childhood development and care, community health,  information and communication technology, legal services, women’s empowerment, rural libraries, Shanthi Sena the youth for peace, spiritual awakening etc. to almost 15,000 villages in Sri Lanka including the areas of war-torn North and East through 34 District Centers and 14 Development Education Institutes (DEI) and multi-Purpose Community Centers (MPCC).
